Jiuzhaigou Scenic and Historic Interest Area: A Dreamy Alpine Wonderland of Turquoise Lakes and Cascading Waterfalls
Jiuzhaigou Scenic and Historic Interest Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, located in the Minshan Mountains of northern Sichuan Province, China. Renowned as “the Fairyland on Earth” and “a paradise given by nature”, Jiuzhaigou is famous for its crystal-clear alpine lakes, spectacular waterfalls, snow-capped peaks, colorful forests, and well-preserved Tibetan villages.
The valley stretches over 50 kilometers and is composed of three main gullies: the Shuzheng Gully, Rize Gully, and Zechawa Gully. It is celebrated for its multi-colored lakes, known as “Haizi”. Fed by snowmelt and spring water, these lakes vary in shades of sapphire blue, turquoise, emerald green, and amber, changing with seasons, light, and depth. The water is so pure that fallen logs and underwater landscapes are clearly visible, creating a magical, unreal beauty.
Jiuzhaigou’s iconic landscapes include:
- Five Flower Lake (Wuhua Hai): the most dazzling lake with multi-layered colors.
- Pearl Shoal Waterfall: a wide, foaming cascade like scattered pearls.
- Nuorilang Waterfall: China’s broadest calcified waterfall, majestic and powerful.
- Long Lake: the deepest and largest alpine lake in Jiuzhaigou.
- Colorful Forests: golden, red and orange foliage in autumn, turning the valley into a painting.
Ecologically, Jiuzhaigou is a precious biodiversity hotspot. Its primitive forests, wetlands, and alpine ecosystems protect rare animals such as giant pandas, golden snub‑nosed monkeys, red pandas, and takins, as well as numerous rare plants. The area plays a key role in water conservation, climate regulation, and ecological security on the eastern edge of the Qinghai‑Tibet Plateau.
Culturally, Jiuzhaigou is home to ancient Tibetan villages where local people have lived in harmony with nature for centuries. Traditional wooden houses, prayer flags, and folk customs blend perfectly into the natural scenery, adding warmth and humanity to the fairy‑tale landscape.
Whether you visit in spring with blooming flowers, summer with green lakes, autumn with fiery forests, or winter with icy waterfalls, Jiuzhaigou offers an otherworldly experience. It is a masterpiece of nature, a sanctuary of peace, and one of the most beautiful natural places on our planet.
