Basic Overview

Shigatse, the second largest city in Xizang, is honored as “Hometown of Mount Everest”. As the core cultural center of posterior Xizang, it inherits profound Tibetan Buddhist civilization and rich national intangible cultural heritages, including multiple schools of Xizang Opera, Tibetan pile weaving and plateau folk dances. Possessing five 8000-meter-level snow mountains and primitive Himalayan valley landscapes, Shigatse features more primitive, quiet and grand plateau style than Lhasa, retaining the most authentic pastoral and religious culture of posterior Xizang.

Useful Travel Tips

1. Best Travel Time: June to October, with warm weather, lush grasslands, clear sky and stable road conditions, suitable for snow mountain sightseeing and plateau travel.
2. Altitude Adaptation: Shigatse’s average altitude is higher than Lhasa. Visitors must fully adapt to plateau reaction in Lhasa before traveling to Everest area.
3. Clothing & Equipment: The temperature at the foot of Everest drops sharply at night. Prepare thick down jackets, thermal underwear, windproof gloves and anti-ultraviolet equipment.
4. Transportation Reminder: Scenic spots are widely scattered. Must travel by professional chartered cars or tourist vehicles; casual self-driving is not recommended.
5. Ecological Protection: The plateau ecology is extremely fragile. Do not litter, trample grasslands or damage wild vegetation to protect pure snow mountain environment.
6. Cultural Taboo: Keep respectful and quiet in all monasteries; do not take photos of religious Buddha statues without permission.
