China Danxia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2010, a serial natural property consisting of six spectacular protected areas: Chishui (Guizhou), Taining (Fujian), Langshan (Hunan), Danxiashan (Guangdong), Longhushan (Jiangxi), and Jianglangshan (Zhejiang). Stretching in a 1,700-kilometer crescent across subtropical southern China, it presents the world’s most complete and representative sequence of Danxia landform evolution from youth to maturity to old age丹霞山风景名胜区.
The term “Danxia” refers to unique landscapes formed from ancient continental red terrestrial sedimentary beds – reddish sandstones and conglomerates shaped over millions of years by tectonic uplift, water erosion, weathering, and collapse. The six areas together record the full evolutionary history of Danxia terrain: from steep, deeply incised young landforms (Chishui, Taining), to spectacular peak-forests in prime (Langshan, Danxiashan), to gentler, isolated peaks and ridges in old age (Longhushan, Jianglangshan). This outstanding geological value earned its inscription under Criterion (viii)丹霞山风景名胜区.
Ecologically, China Danxia shelters rich and unique subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests, supporting diverse wildlife and numerous rare and endemic plants and animals. These well-preserved ecosystems maintain vital water conservation, soil protection, and biodiversity functions across the regions.
Culturally, China Danxia is intertwined with ancient Chinese heritage. Many sites are cradles of Taoism, blessed with ancient temples, cliffside inscriptions, historical paths, and legends. The harmony between red cliffs, green mountains, clear waters and traditional culture makes China Danxia not only a geological wonder but also a sacred land for spiritual peace and scenic enjoyment.
