Old Town of Lijiang

Old Town of Lijiang: A Timeless Ancient City Blending Water, Ethnic Culture and Mountain Harmony

Old Town of Lijiang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1997, located in Lijiang, Yunnan Province, at an altitude of about 2,400 meters. It consists of three core areas: Dayan Old Town, Shuhe Ancient Dwellings and Baisha Ancient Dwellings, and is widely known as “the Venice of the East” and “A City Built by Water”.
Nestled beneath the snow-capped Yulong Snow Mountain, Lijiang is a masterpiece of ancient urban planning. Unlike traditional Chinese cities with enclosed walls, it follows the natural terrain with a free‑flowing layout. Its most extraordinary feature is an ingenious ancient water system originating from Heilongtan (Black Dragon Pool). Canals and streams wind through every lane, connecting every household, forming the poetic scene: “Every family has flowing water; every house has willow branches”. The unique “Three‑Eye Wells” system — one for drinking, one for washing vegetables, one for laundry — shows the ancient Naxi people’s profound wisdom in conserving and respecting water.
As a key hub on the ancient Tea Horse Road, Lijiang has been a melting pot of civilizations for more than 800 years. Its architecture beautifully integrates Han, Bai, Tibetan and Naxi styles — timber structures, blue‑grey tiled roofs, elegant courtyards, exquisitely carved doors and windows, without excessive ornamentation, fully embodying the philosophy of harmony between humanity and nature.
The Old Town is not only an architectural treasure but also a living heritage carrying the unique culture of the Naxi people. It preserves the ancient Dongba culture, including Dongba hieroglyphs, traditional music, dance, handicrafts and local festivals. Naxi elderly in traditional costumes, ancient songs by the canals, and vibrant folk customs make visitors feel as if they have stepped into a living museum of ethnic culture.
The heart of Lijiang is Sifang Street, a centuries-old market square that was once the trading center of the Tea Horse Road. Surrounding it are stone-paved lanes, stone bridges, wooden buildings and peaceful courtyards. Whether walking in the morning mist, enjoying the evening glow, or listening to ancient music by the water, Lijiang offers a peaceful, gentle and unforgettable experience.
Ecologically and culturally, Lijiang perfectly integrates snow-capped mountains, clear waters, ancient trees and traditional dwellings. It bears outstanding universal value as a witness to cultural integration, a model of ancient urban planning, and a rare example of a still‑inhabited ancient historic city. It fully meets UNESCO World Heritage criteria (ii), (iv) and (v).
Today, the Old Town of Lijiang remains a vibrant, living city. It is a place where history and modernity coexist, nature and humanity embrace, and tradition continues to thrive. For travelers seeking beauty, tranquility and profound cultural experiences, Lijiang is more than a destination — it is a state of mind, a timeless dream beneath the snow mountains.
