Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area: A Fairyland of Colorful Travertine Terraces

Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1992, located in the southern part of the Minshan Mountains in Sichuan Province, southwest China. Famous for its rare and magnificent travertine landscapes, Huanglong is honored as “the Pearl of the Plateau” and “a Fairyland on Earth,” offering one of the most unique and visually stunning natural scenes in the world.
The core wonder of Huanglong is its vast, layered travertine formations, stretching over 3.6 kilometers along the mountain valley. Shaped by thousands of years of mineral-rich spring water, the landscape features more than 3,400 vibrant, colorful pools, cascading waterfalls, travertine banks, and natural bridges. The pools glow in brilliant shades of turquoise, sapphire blue, emerald green, amber, and milky white, changing hues with sunlight, seasons, and water depth—creating a living palette of nature.
The most iconic spot is the Multi-colored Pond Group, the largest and most beautiful travertine terrace system in the world. It looks like a golden dragon winding up the snow-capped mountains, hence the name “Huanglong” (Yellow Dragon). The crystal-clear water, smooth travertine banks, and snow-capped peaks in the distance form a picture of incomparable purity and beauty.
Huanglong’s ecosystem is exceptionally well-preserved. Surrounded by primeval forests, alpine meadows, and glaciers, it is a vital biodiversity hotspot, home to rare animals such as the giant panda, golden snub-nosed monkey, red panda, and snow leopard. The high-altitude wetlands and spring systems also play a key role in water conservation and ecological balance on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Culturally, Huanglong is a sacred site in Tibetan culture. The local people regard the colorful pools as divine lakes, and the area preserves rich Tibetan customs, ancient temples, and religious traditions, blending nature and faith in perfect harmony.
Huanglong is more than a scenic spot—it is a masterpiece of geological magic, a sanctuary of plateau life, and a place of spiritual peace. Its unspoiled beauty, extraordinary travertine landscapes, and breathtaking combination of snow mountains, forests, and colored pools make it a must-visit wonder of the natural world.
