Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries

Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries: A Precious Global Sanctuary for Wildlife and Wilderness

Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 2006), the largest and most important protected area for giant pandas on Earth. Located in the Minshan, Qionglai, Daxiangling, Xiaoxiangling and Liangshan mountain ranges of Sichuan Province, these sanctuaries consist of 7 nature reserves and 9 scenic parks, covering more than 924,500 hectares of pristine temperate forest, bamboo groves, alpine meadows, valleys and snow-capped mountains.
More than 30% of the world’s wild giant pandas live here, making this region the irreplaceable core habitat for the species’ survival and reproduction. The dense, lush bamboo forests provide the perfect food and living environment for pandas, while the complex and stable mountain ecosystem supports rich and unique wildlife.
As one of the world’s most significant biodiversity hotspots, the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries protect not only giant pandas but also a large number of rare and endangered species, including red pandas, golden monkeys, takins, snow leopards, green peacocks and hundreds of endemic plants. The area’s well‑preserved forests, wetlands and water systems also serve as a crucial ecological barrier, regulating climate, conserving water and maintaining environmental balance across southwest China.
The sanctuaries are a living museum of natural evolution, where ancient forests thrive, pure rivers flow, and wildlife lives in peace. They represent a successful model of global wildlife conservation and demonstrate humanity’s commitment to protecting nature and endangered species.
For visitors, the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries offer a rare chance to observe giant pandas in their near‑natural habitat, explore spectacular mountain and forest scenery, and understand the importance of ecological protection. It is a place of innocence, vitality and natural beauty—a true paradise where humans, pandas and nature live in harmony.
