Basic Overview

Guangdong Province is on China’s southern coast, northern South China Sea, with Guangzhou as capital. It is one of China’s most economically developed and populous provinces, the core of Lingnan culture. With north-high and south-low terrain, it has mountains, hills, plains and coastlines, humid and rainy climate, featuring modern cities, ancient Lingnan villages, beaches, karst landscapes and overseas Chinese towns.

 Natural Landscapes 

Guangdong has diverse natural landscapes: karst mountains in the north, hot springs and lakes in the center, islands and beaches in the south, Chaoshan coast in the east and Zhanjiang peninsula in the west. It is evergreen, ideal for winter escape and vacation.

1.Seven Star Crags (Zhaoqing):

Karst peaks, caves and lakes, known as “the first wonder of Lingnan”, as beautiful as Guilin.image

2.Hailing Island:

One of China’s top ten most beautiful islands, with fine beaches and clear water, great for surfing and sunsets.image

3.Danxia Mountain:

Historical & Cultural Sites

Guangdong has a long history and profound Lingnan culture, with ancient cities, villages, temples, arcades and overseas Chinese houses everywhere, blending Chinese and Western styles.

1.Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (Guangzhou):

The peak of Lingnan architecture, a Qing Dynasty ancestral hall with exquisite carvings and decorations, a masterpiece of Lingnan decorative art.image

2.Chaozhou Ancient City:

A thousand-year-old city with Paifang Street, Kaiyuan Temple and Guangji Bridge, the core of Chaoshan culture, well-preserved ancient bridges, temples and houses.image

3.Foshan Ancestral Temple:

A representative of ancient Lingnan architecture, dedicated to the God of Zhenwu, with exquisite carvings and a sacred place for martial arts culture (Huang Feihong, Ip Man).image

A World Cultural Heritage, multi-story towers blending Chinese and Western styles, combining defense, residence and architectural art, a witness of overseas Chinese history.

Folk Customs & Intangible Heritage 

Guangdong has diverse folk customs with three major ethnic groups: Cantonese, Chaoshan and Hakka, featuring rich festivals, operas, handicrafts and food culture.

1.Cantonese Opera:

A major local opera in Guangdong, with melodious singing and delicate acting, mostly based on folk stories and historical legends, a representative of Lingnan culture.

2.Chaoshan Yingge Dance:

A grand folk dance in Chaoshan festivals, featuring Water Margin heroes, powerful and rhythmic, performed during Spring Festival and Lantern Festival.

3.Guangcai Porcelain Making:

A traditional Lingnan porcelain craft with bright, golden colors and Chinese-Western patterns, representative of export porcelain.

4.Hakka Folk Song:

A traditional folk song in Hakka areas, loud and improvised, about labor, love and life, a carrier of Hakka culture.

Local Cuisine 

Cantonese cuisine is one of China’s eight major cuisines, light, fresh, tender, smooth and crisp, focusing on original flavors, good at seafood, roasted meats, soups and morning tea. Guangdong is known as “China’s food capital”.

1.Cantonese Morning Tea:

Shrimp dumplings, siu mai, chicken feet, char siu bao, rice rolls and egg tarts, exquisite and diverse, a representative of Cantonese lifestyle.image

2.Roast Goose:

A classic Cantonese dish with crispy skin, tender meat, bright color and rich fat, served with plum sauce, fragrant and not greasy.image

3.Chaoshan Beef Hot Pot:

Freshly cut beef, cooked in clear soup, sweet and fresh beef, seasoned with satay sauce or Puning bean paste, original flavor.image

Travel Tips

1.Best time:

October–April (warm and comfortable for winter escape); May–September is hot, humid and rainy with frequent typhoons.

2.Clothing:

Mostly summer clothes year-round; light jacket in winter; rain gear in rainy season.

3.Food tips:

Morning tea in Guangzhou/Shunde; seafood in Chaoshan/Zhanjiang; roasted meats good everywhere.

4.Transportation:

High-speed trains widely available; convenient intercity trains; self-driving or charter recommended for islands/ancient towns.

5.Etiquette:

Cantonese value tea etiquette; dress neatly in temples; respect local dietary taboos.
