Guilin

Basic Overview

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is in southern China, western South China, with Nanning as capital, home to the Zhuang ethnic group with rich minority culture. It has widespread karst landforms, famous for “Guilin’s mountains and rivers”, featuring Li River, peaks, caves, terraces and coastlines, warm and humid climate, evergreen year-round, known for Guilin scenery, Zhuang culture, border landscapes and longevity culture.

Natural Landscapes

 
Guangxi’s natural landscapes are centered on karst mountains and rivers. Guilin, Yangshuo and Li River are world-famous, with Detian Waterfall, Longji Terraces, Weizhou Island and Qingxiu Mountain featuring picturesque scenery and rural poetry.

1.Li River (Guilin–Yangshuo):

Historical & Cultural Sites

Guangxi has a long history with blended Baiyue, Zhuang and border cultures, featuring ancient towns, villages, drum towers and wind-rain bridges with strong ethnic customs.

1.Yangshuo West Street:

A thousand-year-old street blending Chinese and Western styles, with bluestone roads, Ming-Qing buildings, bars, restaurants and handicrafts, a foreigner street and core of Yangshuo tourism.image

 

2.Huangyao Ancient Town:

A thousand-year-old town in Hezhou, surrounded by karst mountains, with bluestone roads, ancient bridges, houses and trees, simple and quiet, less commercialized.image

3.Chengyang Wind-Rain Bridge:

In Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County, one of the world’s four famous historical bridges, a representative of Dong architecture, all wood structure without nails, combining bridge, corridor, pavilion and tower.image

4.Elephant Trunk Hill (Guilin):

The city symbol of Guilin, resembling an elephant drinking water, a karst mountain with Moon Water Cave, a must-visit landmark.image

Folk Customs & Intangible Heritage 

Guangxi is mainly inhabited by Zhuang, Yao, Dong and Miao ethnic groups, with splendid ethnic culture, unique festivals, dances, handicrafts and costumes, enthusiastic and unrestrained.

1.Zhuang “March 3” Song Festival:

The grandest Zhuang festival, with antiphonal singing, throwing silk balls, bamboo pole dancing and five-color glutinous rice, lively and full of ethnic charm.

2.Dong Grand Song:

A World Intangible Cultural Heritage, Dong multi-part chorus without conductor or accompaniment, natural harmonies imitating birds and water, sounds of nature.

3.Yao Embroidery:

A traditional Yao handicraft with bright colors and beautiful patterns, flowers, birds and geometric designs, used in clothing, baby carriers and headscarves, distinctive ethnic features.

4.Miao Lusheng Dance:

A Miao festival dance, playing lusheng and group dancing, cheerful rhythm and unrestrained movements, performed in festivals with lively atmosphere.

Local Cuisine 

Guangxi cuisine is sour, spicy, fresh and fragrant, blending Zhuang, Yao, Dong and Han flavors, rich in rice noodles, sour snacks, glutinous rice, mountain products and seafood, down-to-earth and unique.

1.Guilin Rice Noodles:

A representative Guangxi dish, rich brine, smooth noodles and various toppings (beef, pork, marinated egg, sour bamboo shoots), sour, spicy and fragrant, famous nationwide.image

2.Luosifen:

A Liuzhou specialty, rice noodles in snail soup with sour bamboo shoots, tofu skin, fungus, peanuts and chili oil, strong smelly-fragrant flavor, sour and spicy, a popular internet food.image

3.Five-Color Glutinous Rice:

A traditional Zhuang and Dong food, dyed with natural plants into black, red, yellow, white and purple, soft and sweet, essential for festivals.image

4.Beihai Seafood:

Fresh fish, shrimp, crabs, shellfish and squid around Weizhou Island and Beihai Silver Beach, steamed, blanched or stir-fried, original flavor.image

Travel Tips

1.Best time:

March–May (blooming spring) and September–November (cool autumn), pleasant weather and best scenery.

2.Clothing:

Hot and humid in summer, bring sunscreen and rain gear; mild in winter, light jacket; temperature changes in mountains.

3.Reservations:

Book Li River cruises, Impression Sanjie Liu and Detian Waterfall in peak season.

4.Transportation:

High-speed trains to Guilin/Yangshuo; convenient tourist buses within the province; charter recommended for terraces/border areas.

5.Etiquette:

Respect minority customs; keep quiet in drum towers/wind-rain bridges; follow instructions during festival activities.
