Basic Overview 

Hubei Province lies in central China and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, with Wuhan as the capital. Known as the land of Chu culture and a province of thousands of lakes. The Yangtze and Han Rivers run through it, dotted with countless lakes. Its landforms include western mountains, Jianghan Plain and eastern hills. It is the birthplace of Chu culture, with profound Three Kingdoms and Tujia culture. It boasts rivers, lakes, ancient towers, canyons and forests, and serves as an important transportation hub in central China.

Natural Landscapes

Hubei integrates great rivers, vast lakes, high mountains, canyons and primeval forests. The western mountains are magnificent, the central plain is covered with lakes, and the eastern hills are gentle. It has distinct four seasons and abundant resources for summer retreat, mountain climbing and lake tours.
1.Shennongjia:
A World Natural Heritage and China’s largest primeval forest reserve. It has dense vegetation, rare wildlife and lingering clouds. Cool in summer, it is famous as a natural oxygen bar and a resort for ecological exploration.

2.Yangtze Three Gorges (Hubei Section):

Composed of Qutang, Wu and Xiling Gorges. Steep cliffs stand along the river with strange peaks stretching endlessly. A cruise tour offers a magnificent natural gallery view.

3.Enshi Grand Canyon:

Known as the Oriental Colorado. It features sinkholes, ground cracks, steep cliffs and karst caves. With magnificent peaks and misty clouds, it is perfect for hiking and sightseeing.

4.Wuhan East Lake:

China’s largest urban lake with vast water area and green corridors. Cherry, plum and lotus gardens bloom all year round, ideal for cycling, walking and boating.

Historical & Cultural Sites

Hubei is rich in historical relics, including Chu cultural sites, Three Kingdoms ancient cities, Taoist mountains, famous ancient towers and revolutionary sites, carrying profound historical heritage.

1.Yellow Crane Tower:

One of China’s Four Great Ancient Towers, located on Snake Hill in Wuhan. Elegant in architecture, it offers a panoramic view of the Yangtze River and Wuhan city skyline.

2.Jingzhou Ancient City:

The best-preserved ancient city wall in southern China. With solid blue brick walls and complete layout, it retains numerous relics of the Three Kingdoms period.

3.Wudang Mountain Ancient Buildings:

A World Cultural Heritage and sacred Taoist site. The grand ancient buildings integrate Taoist culture and martial arts culture with worldwide reputation.

4.Gulongzhong:

The seclusion place of Zhuge Liang in the Three Kingdoms period. With quiet mountains and ancient pavilions, it is a classic spot to experience Three Kingdoms culture.

 Folk Customs & Intangible Heritage

Hubei folk customs blend Jingchu style with Tujia and Miao ethnic features. Opera, folk songs, festivals and traditional crafts have been inherited for a long time with strong local characteristics.

1.Chu Opera:

A classic local opera in Hubei with simple and melodious tunes, popular among people in the Jianghan Plain.

2.Tujia Hand-Waving Dance:

A representative folk dance of the Tujia people in western Hubei. Graceful and rhythmic, it is performed in festivals and weddings.

3.Enshi Nuo Opera:

Known as a living fossil of drama. It combines sacrifice, dance and singing with mysterious masks, a precious heritage of ancient folk culture.

4.Wuhan Wood Carving Ship Model:

A traditional craft reproducing ancient warships and merchant ships with exquisite carving, featuring unique Jingchu artistic style.

 Local Cuisine

Hubei cuisine features mellow and savory flavors with a hint of spiciness. It is rich in river seafood and local snacks with strong life atmosphere.

1.Reganmian (Hot Dry Noodles):

Wuhan’s signature breakfast. Chewy noodles mixed with sesame paste, dried radish and scallions, rich in sauce flavor.

2.Wuchang Fish:

A classic Hubei dish with tender and delicious meat. Usually steamed to retain original freshness, a representative river seafood dish.

3.Zhou Hei Ya:

Famous Wuhan braised duck with spicy, sweet and savory taste, chewy and popular nationwide.

4.Enshi Hezha:

A traditional Tujia home dish with strong bean flavor and tender taste, matched with coarse grains for a rustic flavor.
